Sorghum

Fodder sorghum species (grain sorghum, silage sorghum and Sudan grass) belong to the fodder crops with the best drought tolerance in Hungary.

Sorghum species tolerate less favourable climatic and soil conditions owing to the bulky and deeply into the soil penetrating root system and the waxy layer covering the foliage and the stem and therefore they can be produced profitably on soils of poorer quality as well. They are characterized by excellent re-growing and regenerating ability. Our sorghum hybrids have tolerance to pests and diseases, just to mention maize dwarf mosaic virus (MDMV), Fusarium spp. and bacterial leaf blight.

General production technological guide for sorghum species:

  • Soil management: carefully prepared seed bed with fine soil crumb sizes and well compacted soil after planting
  • Planting date: at soil temperatures 12–13oC (late April or early May)
  • Planting depth: 3-5 cm
  • Weed control: Preemergence weed control is suggested. Please see our website for the detailed weed control of sorghum
